Ask anyone in the know what makes a perfect po’ boy sandwich and they’ll tell you it’s all about the bread: fresh-baked French loaves with a crunchy crust and light-as-air center. Lucky for us, B’s Po Boy at 1261 South Shelby Street in Fountain Square has got the line on the best bread in the city! Shipments of dough arrive daily from New Orleans’ historic Leidenheimer Baking Company, established in 1896. B’s then bakes the loaves fresh to order, so you’ll get the perfect combination of chomp to chew.

Come on in to taste for yourself. The Loopers recommend Grilled Oyster po’ boy with a side of sweet potato fries and some spicy remoulade. Wash it down with an Abita root beer on the back patio for a perfect summer lunch. Or, drop by at night with a group of your buds, and watch the game while you grab a brew and nosh on delicious authentic New Orleans-style cuisine. In addition to the perfect sandwich, Po Boys also serves up heaping helpings of gumbo, red beans and rice, andouille sausage, blackened catfish, shrimp, alligator bites, and a HUGE selection of beignets. Plus there are two bocce ball courts and a giant Jenga tower to keep guests busy while they wait for great eats!

And as a family owned establishment, B’s Po Boy also has the perfect combination of heart and a whole lot of Cajun attitude. Building on the success of their first location in Fountain Square, owners Deb and Ryan Borchelt are excited to give back to a new community by opening a new 4,500 square-foot location on Bonna Avenue in Irvington’s historic Coal Factory. The Borchelts plan to be open in June 2015, and have made a ten-year commitment to maintaining the completely renovated and re-designed site as part of a $500,000 development grant awarded to the Irvington Development Organization and the City of Indianapolis for business and infrastructure improvements. The new Coal Factory location will is easily accessible for walkers and bicyclists on the recently-approved Pennsy trail, and will feature ample parking for access to the new businesses that will benefit from the grant. B’s Po Boy in Irvington will offer the same great food and beer as the Fountain Square shop, but the larger floor plan has the owners planning for a selection of indoor games and potential new menu offerings.

Whether at the original location in Fountain Square, or at their new Irvington digs, get all the Borchelt’s recommendations on how to enjoy the best of NOLA in the Midwest.
