Traveling to Greece is one of my fondest memories. The food, culture, and people make this a go-to destination for all. Even though it’s been years since I walked along the Aegean Sea in Santorini or explored the ruins of Athens, I still get my fix of Mediterranean cooking quite frequently… and it doesn’t cost a huge plane ticket either.
Greek Islands is a family owned restaurant on South Meridian Street offering what I think is the most delicious Greek food in the Midwest. A stone’s throw from the historic Shapiro’s Deli and in walking distance from Lucas Oil Stadium, this authentic eatery offers every traditional dish found in the Hellenic Republic.
Big George, owner of Greek Islands, and the rest of his Greek family make visiting this restaurant a homey experience with big barrel hugs and traditional belly dancing.
My recommendation is to try the Gyro with extra tzatziki sauce! Remember, gyro is pronounced yee-ro. The meat is cooked perfectly and the pita bread is delightfully warm. They also have delicious hummus.
The next time you visit Greek Islands, tell Big George that everyone from IN the Loop TV Show says hello! You’ll be part of the family in no time.
